2006 Community Volunteer Awards

On May 11, United Way honored ten of our community's most outstanding volunteers at its annual Community Volunteer Awards Breakfast at Groves Stadium's Bridger Field House. Wachovia's Paula Robinson, herself a long-time United Way volunteer, delivered the keynote address.

Youth Volunteer: Megan Lindsey Snider
Megan has completed a more than 230 hours of volunteer service. She serves her community, not only as a volunteer, but also through her church. She has been very active in Carolina Cross Connection (CCC). Through CCC, a ministry of Megan's church, she has had the opportunity to share her faith and demonstrate Christ's love to those less fortunate.

Young Adult: David Granger
David has been a wonderful part of the volunteer family at the Ronald McDonald House since 2003. On top of volunteering for his church, extracurricular school activities and working at a part time job, be brings joy to the Ronald McDonald House every Monday afternoon. Whether he is preparing food for the families, arranging house linens or recruiting new volunteers, David has touched and continues to bless the hearts of many people in need at the Ronald McDonald House and in our community.

College: Jonathan Barry
Jonathan created a one -on-one buddy program between Wake Forest students and students at The Children's Center for the Physically Disabled, called H.O.P.E.-Helping to Overcome Physical Expectations. He is an active buddy himself for Jacob, age 6.
Adult: Susan Nesbit (and Buddy) Susan and her therapy dog, Buddy, are dedicated and caring pet therapy volunteers. Since the program's inception in 2002, Susan and Buddy have visited the Ronald McDonald House every Wednesday night to provide comfort and smiles to families coping with a child's illness. Each week, families look forward to the energy and fun Susan and Buddy provide with the amazing animal visits, and our House would not be the same without them.

Senior: George Brinsmaid
George has been a vital member of the 2nd and 4th Tuesday Soup Kitchen team since the day Samaritan Ministries opened its door on March 2, 1981 and he still continues to do so to this day at an active member at age 89.

Senior: Jo Ann Helms
Jo Ann is an extraordinary, kind and loving woman. She gives very generously of her time to folks who are going through the worst days of their lives. Her thoughtfulness, care and compassion make a difference in the lives of our families every day she volunteers.

Adult Elementary: Tyann Johnson
Tyann has volunteered her time and talents this year at Union Cross Elementary. She volunteered over 175 hours at the school store, in her daughter's classroom, and with various other activities throughout the school.

Adult Middle: Meg Hilleary
Med is a new parent to Hanes Middle School. She noticed that the school webpage was not complete, or did it showcase the wonderful education that the students at Hanes were receiving. Through talking with staff people and volunteers who shared her vision, she created a Web Team who improved, extended, and modified the Hanes website so that current parents and students can have access to all pertinent information.

Coordinator of Volunteers: Fran Harrington
This is Fran's 2nd year as TSCS Volunteer Coordinator and has increased our volunteer participation 100% or more! Fran's ability to relate to volunteers of all ages and abilities has been obvious in the relationships she has developed and the commitment from our volunteers.

Business Volunteer: Clemmons Moravian Church
Clemmons Moravian Church don't have any family ties to Clemmons Elementary. The volunteers recognize and embrace the needs of the children in the local community and schools. They spend countless hours listening to our children read and helping our children improve their reading skills. These volunteers are normally the only source of support for the child outside the school teachers.
