Dr. Thomas K. Hearn, Jr., then president of Wake Forest University, initiated the Leadership Circle in 1986. His goal was to increase the involvement of professionals in addressing human service needs through United Way of Forsyth County. In its first year, the Leadership Circle had 400 members and gave $550,000 to United Way. In 2008, over 4,100 members gave $8.4 million, 48 percent of the campaign total.
The Leadership Circle includes four groups:
- The Leadership Circle for those giving a minimum of $1,000 annually
- The Women's Leadership Council for women using the BB&T matching grant program to make gifts of over $1,000 annually
- The Tocqueville Leadership Society for those giving a mimimum of $10,000 annually
- The Cornerstone Society for those giving $100,000 or more annually
United Way of Forsyth County is pleased to acknowledge the philanthropy of our Leadership Circle givers. Their substantial investment in our community is advancing the common good by creating real, long-lasting change that will prevent many problems from occurring in the first place.
