Giving Tuesday is an opportunity for people worldwide to come together to give, show kindness, thank, and share what they have with those in need. In Forsyth County, we are asking our community to work with us on ensuring childhood and student success by supporting summer slide prevention programs.
Reading is a critical predictor of high school success or failure. This is because children are learning to read until fourth grade; after that, they are reading to learn. Currently, only 39% of third-grade students in Forsyth County are reading on a third-grade level. Their growing literacy skills are critical to closing academic and opportunity gaps throughout their future, creating a habit for lifelong learning, and building the foundation for critical thinking.
Through collaborative work with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School District and partner agencies, United Way of Forsyth County is focused on ensuring the success of our youngest residents.
One of our actions is strategically investing in community-based programs to prevent summer learning loss in reading and math skills. In 2023, we aim to serve over 380 youth from families in historically marginalized communities through summer enrichment programs.
Join us this #GivingTuesday. For every $65, you can send a student to a week of safe, fun, and educational summer programming in Forsyth County.
